While the Chinese ring in the Year of the Sheep in 2015, California could easily call this the Year of the Train. The controversial, high-speed bullet train that is expected to travel between Los Angeles and San Francisco in approx. 4 hours, cost $98 billion to complete (with a funding shortfall of $30 billion,) open around 2033 and require millions of dollars in annual subsidies to operate, is still on track and seems to be gaining speed as a ground breaking ceremony was held this week for the project.
Trains are important to Californians. Many of our ancestors arrived here by train after the last spike was driven to join the tracks of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads, completing the First Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869. With significant train museums throughout the state, great collections of vintage railroad artifacts, and upcoming train expos to attend, there’s no shortage of train experiences in 2015.
