While competitors in soapbox derbies want their wheels to spin fast, contemporary spins on the old-fashioned contest bring light-hearted laughs. On June 5, 2016 the annual Nevada City Adult Soapbox Derby includes hilarious vehicles that look like a Wiener dog, Mr. Potato Head, perhaps, or pair of glasses stationed on a large nose. Sky’s the limit on imagination but the contestants can’t spend more than 500 bucks.
One week later and 10 hours by car a similar soapbox derby in San Diego’s Little Italy showcases accomplishments of the kids at Washington Elementary S.T.E.A.M. Magnet School. Whimsical race vehicles are decked out like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, a cannoli, mermaid, and more. Along with the student race, this year’s 2016 VanGo! S.T.E.A.M. Festival includes an adult race, as well.
