Although Mammoth Lakes Night of Lights Torchlight Parade has already taken place in mid-December, two annual torchlight traditions are set for New Year’s Eve. Snow Summit Ski Resort in Big Bear Lake hosts their annual Dec.31 night-time ski trip down the mountain, illuminated by battery-operated lights. Snow Summit’s New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade in Southern California’s San Bernardino mountains is one of several in California designed to light the way to a new year filled with glorious skiing.
The other event on the same evening at Alpine Meadows in the high Sierras is billed as the World’s Largest Torchlight Parade! In 2018-2019 there’s also a Kids Torchlight Parade for skiers and riders ages 5+ to join together for the final lap of 2018. Colorful LED torches are held as skiers thread down a 3.2-mile Mountain Run in an attempt to best 3,000 participants and break a record.
