Spring 2012 in San Diego is all about “SEA”. Shipyards, cruise ships, yachts, Navy Pacific Fleet, and fishing boats are part the 2nd largest city in California’s way of life. The ocean and bays are so key that up till the 1960’s San Diego, California was recognized as the Tuna Fishing Capital of the World. Today a lovely mermaid miss continues to salute San Diego-based Chicken of the Sea, in fact.
On April 22, 2012 “TUNA” opens at San Diego History Center (sandiegohistory.org). Between the 1920s and 1960s fishing boats and canneries manned by Italian, Portuguese, and Japanese families helped make Chicken of the Sea and other brands of canned tuna famous. An exhibition lets visitors experience pole-fishing, packing and canning activities, through December 31.
This Spring another “big fish,” SeaWorld San Diego (seaworld.com) splashes with MANTA, the newest launch coaster at the theme park.
For those who would rather catch fish than explore their attributes or role in San Diego commerce, go sportfishing to see if you can beat Mike Livingston’s world record. The Sunland visitor caught the world’s biggest 405.2-pound tuna in December 2010 on the San Diego-based Vagabond. It took 2 hours and 40 minutes to bring the tuna in.
