Steinbeck House Is Pleasant Walk from National Steinbeck Center

SALINAS, CALIF.–If you’ve taken all the time to drive to the fabulous National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, why not go the distance (all of 2 blocks) on Central Avenue to see where the literary legend grew up. A Queen Anne Victorian house built in 1897 sits in a neighborhood of preserved homes just down the street from the modern-looking museum. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house is open to the public for daytime dining!

For around $10-15 you can sit in the very rooms where the young Steinbeck spent time with his mom & dad–his parents moved into the property in 1900. Steinbeck was born in 1902 and lived to 1968. A group of local women bought the property many years ago and have kept the legacy of Nobel Prize recipient John Steinbeck front & center by maintaining the property, using funds from the restaurant to support the home and other civic causes!
