Sunsets and Piers Can’t Be Beat

Published on: April 19, 2012

There’s something oh so special about sunsets  when you’re hanging around a pier (in California.) Shown is a  bodyboarder exiting the Pacific Ocean as the sun goes down–seen through barnacle-covered pier pilings.  If you’re looking for pure pier pleasure in California, here are a few places to check out!

California Pier Pleasures:

  • Crystal Pier in San Diego rents beach cottages where you can listen to the sound of the waves lull you to sleep at night. San Diego also enjoys Ocean Beach Pier, a favorite for fishing and the 2nd longest pier in California at 1,971 feet in length.
  • Santa Cruz Wharf is the longest over-water pier in California at a length of 2,745 feet in length. You can drive on the wooden-planked pier and park next to stores and restaurants offering great views.
  • The pier at Seacliff State Beach anchors a dilapidated and crumbling cement ship. The cement ship was once a party boat.
  • Nearly every pier has benches allowing visitors to sit.
  • Fishing is free from all California public piers.
  • One of the best places to take a date, piers have more kissing going on than surrounding beaches that anchor them. If you think romance is dead, just visit a pier around sunset!

Cities where you’ll find over the water, Pacific Ocean piers include Imperial Beach, San Diego, Oceanside, San Clemente, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, Long Beach (Belmont Shore), Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Malibu, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Goleta, Pismo Beach, Avila Beach, Cayucos, San Simeon, Monterey, Capitola, Aptos,  Santa Cruz, Pacifica, Point Arena, and maybe a few more.
