SUNSET BEACH, CALIF.– Quilts can be functional, but they also may tell stories. The quilt in left photo is the current grand prize in a drawing to raise money for community programs such as music in schools. The causes are worthy ones, and if you have the winning ticket, you get a one-of-a-kind, professionally-sewn quilt created by the all-volunteer Las Damas organization. It’s a gift filled with meaning, and a tradition of giving that began in 1976 when the first quilt was constructed. Each year some 30 volunteers (give or take a few,) select icons reflecting the local environment such as sunshine, the beach, the ocean, flip flop sandals, sailboats, whales, a seahorse and a shovel & pail, and create them on equally sized squares for the fun-filled blanket. If you are interested in purchasing tickets for this item, they cost around $5 each. The drawing takes place on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2013 during the Sunset Beach Art Festival and the winner is not required to be present.
