How popular are rodeos in California? Let’s see… Cotton Rosser, founder of Flying U Rodeo productions, was recently honored at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Los Angeles. “I spent my childhood dreaming of being a cowboy and living a cowboy life. As a small boy, in Long Beach, CA, I wanted to be a cowboy,” he said. He produces 35-50 rodeos in California, Nevada and the Western States each year.
There are over 100 rodeos each year in California that include Indian cowboys, black cowboys, women cowgirls and national, international and locally produced festivals and competitions. While some urban cities whose roots have sprung from California ranchos now reject rodeo events, you’ll rarely see this happen in true cowboy country where ranching and farming are a way of life. In such cities and towns they throw out the welcome mat letting people know their destinations are cowboy-friendly.
