Beaches Returning to Normal at Point Mugu

Point Mugu State Beach  includes five miles of great hiking, camping and beachcombing. Sycamore Beach (shown) is part of Point Mugu  at the base of Sycamore Canyon, an entryway to more than 70 miles of hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains.  The very large Mugu Rock nearby is a headlands promontory  you can’t miss. The rock is popular for climbing at beaches between Ventura and Los Angeles that are enjoyable this time year before spring break. Beware at this location and keep an eye on your kids. In 2008 a rogue wave swept away three residents from nearby Oxnard who were climbing on Mugu Rock. The word, Mugu, may have come from a Chumash Indian term Muwu, or beach.

Last weekend beaches along the coast were fairly trashed and the water was unhealthy after it rained. Thanks to incredible volunteers and nature’s healing powers, Point Mugu looks like it is back to ‘beautiful’ again.
