Beaches to See in California: Cayucos State Beach

Published on: November 11, 2012

On the wind-swept Central Coast of California is a beach that people are drawn to for its old-fashioned appeal. Cayucos State Beach in Cayucos is located approx. 6 miles north of Morro Bay and 15 miles south of Cambria.  San Simeon’s  famed Hearst Castle is approx. 26 miles north and takes approx. 40 minutes to drive to on CA-1 Highway.

Cayucos Beach is known for its commanding views of Morro Rock and its fishing pier that people love to stroll and fish from, free of charge. The beach isn’t exactly pristine by most standards. It is kept in a natural state, unlike Southern California beaches where millions of people come and bulldozers nightly comb the sand for debris and trash. No, Caycucos beach is a natural beach where you can comb the sand yourself to find lots of seaweed, driftwood, small seashells, and some smooth pebbles washed ashore.

Cayucos Beach is a relaxing California beach, busiest in the summer months and mellow during the winter. Take a stroll along this beautiful, intimate beach but be sure to take a jacket, especially during the winter and at night. The winds can blow, and the temps feel mighty cold sometimes!

THINGS TO DO:

  • Annual Polar Plunge on Jan. 1, New Year’s Day
  • Surfing is great
  • For vacationers, there are some great little privately owned (non-chain) hotels and inns where you can stay, always just a short walk from the beach. Some have balcony and patio deck beach views, as well.
