California Up for Apples

Apple season is upon us and the fruit is ripe for picking!  Beginning in September apple lovers can visit U-pick orchards throughout the state to enjoy the farm fresh hand-to-mouth experience of eating this sweet, juicy treat.

Apple Facts

  • Humans have been enjoying apples since at least 6500 B.C.
  • The science of apple growing is called pomology.
  • Apples are a member of the rose family.
  • The five most popular apples in the United States are Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Gala, Fuji and Granny Smith.
  • Some apple trees live over a 100 years.
  • Bobbing for apples is possible because 25% of an apple’s volume is air. That is why they float.
  • In colonial time the apple was called winter banana or melt-in-the-mouth.
  • One of George Washington’s hobbies was pruning his apple trees.
  • The world’s top apple producers are China, United States, Turkey, Iran and Poland.
  • Apples grow in all 50 U.S. States.

  • California’s Counties that grow the most apples by acreage are: San Joaquin; then Sonoma; then Santa Cruz.
  • California ranks 5th in the nation for apple production, and 2nd in exports.
  • California exports apples to over 60 countries.

Apple Festivals and Events

  • HAYWARD:  Garin Apple Festival Sept,8, 2018. Garin is home to an antique apple orchard with varieties of apples you won’t find anywhere else. Try your hand at hand-cranking ice cream or pressing apple cider and then taste the fruit of your labor.
  • BOONVILLE: Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show Sept.14-16. Contests include Apple Sauce, Apple Cake, Apple Pie, Apple Cider, Apple Juice, Apple Jelly, Apple Butter, Apple Syrup and Dried Apples.
  • AVILA BEACH:  Apple Festival Dinner Sept.22
  • APPLE HILL: Johnny Appleseed Day Sept.23 is celebrated in a variety of ways at member orchards.
