Fiestas Patrias (which means Patriotic Holidays in Spanish,) is a September 16 celebration paying homage to Mexico’s independence from French rule. In addition to the cities of Los Angeles, El Centro, Redwood City, Pasadena and Santa Ana hosting Fiestas Patrias festivals, you’ll find celebrations at shopping venues, in sports arenas, and at parks. Many of the events take place on the weekend closest to Sept. 16, which means there will be quite a few street festivals this weekend. Some have parades, some have concerts with famous (or not so famous) Latin bands and recording artists, and most include food vendors, games, dancing and El Grito, the cheer for freedom.
