If you live near beaches in California like the majority of residents do, you don’t necessarily get much exposure to forests and logging. Just try finding wood on a beach for lighting a bonfire and you’ll discover what a precious commodity it is! Thanks to a handful of museums in California you can learn about lumberjacking, logging and the important role lumber plays in our daily living.
Our favorite starting point for learning about lumber is the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum (sierraloggingmuseum.org) in Arnold. Located next to the spectacular Calaveras Big Trees State Park, the seasonally-opened museum features many interactive displays and models that bring the process to life. One the most exciting events the museum hosts all year is the Annual Logging Jamboree on Saturday, August 31, 2013. Professional and amateur contests for axe throwing and saw events are fascinating. Great food, games for the kids, museum tours, Shay locomotive presentations and other activities are part of the 18th annual Jamboree. Admission is $5.
Other logging museums and displays are located in Scotia, Eureka and at Samoa Cookhouse.
