Even with global warming, California ocean temps are surprisingly cool, according to tourists who expect warm ocean water to match the sun-drenched beaches. Among the hottest beaches in California, San Diego has the warmest ocean water for swimming and surfing. It peaks out in the mid 70s starting today through August 31. Then the temperature begins to drop.
For those living on the North Coast of California, there’s nearly a 20 degree difference in the summer ocean temps as Trinidad peaks at around 55-60. During the winter there’s only 10 to 12 degrees difference between south and north, however. Now you know why surfers who spend hours in the water wear wetsuits!
