When in Rome, eat roma tomatoes. When in California, throw roma tomatoes at your friends during the gigantic tomato battle coming to San Diego and Orange County. Fashioned after the huge tomato throwing event in Buñol, Spain, the California version of La Tomatina is served with a twist–beer gardens and bands.
While tomato battles are sweet, biting into a juicy tomato can’t be beat! If you would rather eat your tomatoes, the best bet for finding tomato festivals is not in Southern California. Instead, head for the place where they grow best–the Central Valley. You’ll find tomato festivals in Fairfield, Woodland, Capay, Fulton and Los Banos, taking place July through October. California is the tomato capital, growing more tomatoes than any place in the U.S.
