There’s a big world out there when it comes to the US Open, and California has hosted its fair share of them–US Open of Golf, US Open of Tennis, US Open of Surfing, US Open of Sandcastles and US Open of Volleyball, to name a few. When preparing for coverage of one of our annual favorites, US Open of Sandcastles at San Diego’s Imperial Beach, we had to choke and nearly shed a tear. The official website lists the event’s obituary–after 31 years and millions of sandcastle guests, the event is dead in 2012, never to return again!
Following on the heels of the disbandment of the Association of Volleyball Professions (AVP) Pro Beach Volleyball US Open Tournament, things were looking a little dreary for the US Open in California. However, those two events that will be fondly remembered, aren’t going to stop the biggest US Open events to hit our Pacific Shores. In fact, 2012 is a stellar year for US Open games.
