In the historic state park/town of Columbia, Calif., you can kick back, relax, and do nothing at all. There are two gold rush era hotels, City Hotel & Fallon Hotel (see briggshospitalityllc.com) where you are going to learn how how to mellow out. Why? the shower is often down the hall and in your hotel room, well, there’s no TV and nothing much to do–except sleep. How’s that for forced relaxation? The opportunity to stay in this authentic town with two historic hotels and a theater with live performances may seem ho-hum, but it’s a great experience, honest. At night when you wander the little street lined with authentic 1800s shops and stores, you may see deer grazing in the shrubs next to the road. Sometimes you’ll even see a bearded old miner wander by, barely visible in the dark shadows. In the light of day, there are often tours, dining, shopping, gold panning and even a stagecoach ride!
If you can handle a low-stress holiday, do book a hotel room and stay in Columbia rather than day-trip. It’s recommended that you plan your vacation to coincide with performances at the Sierra Repertory Theatre right next door to Fallon Hotel.
