Five national protected areas have portions of their lands within Colusa County. The setting features beauty beyond compare a mere 80 miles north of Sacramento off I-5. It’s where the action takes place in early April each year as cowboys from around the region all gather for Colusa Western Days held April 10-12, 2015. There are quite a few clubs involved in producing the annual event that includes a cattle drive parade through town, penning and roping contests, dutch oven cooking contest and a BBQ cookoff. TheGlenn-Colusa Cattle Women (upper left picture) really should take a bow because they are one of the biggest supporters of the free admission weekend event. In contrast, next week’s Cowboy Festival in Santa Clarita charges a fee and attracts thousands while the entire city of Colusa is made up approx. 6,000 people total! There’s much to be said for country living in the heart of cattle ranching territory. Colusa Western Days celebrates the region’s proud heritage and efforts to educate youth and adults about cattle farming.
