Corning Bed Races Not Corny, Part of Olive Celebrations

Published on: June 21, 2012

Do you think you’ve seen everything in California?  In Big Bear this summer there’s an Outhouse Race at Old Miners’ Day. In Arcata they host  Kinetic Sculpture Race. And for the Corning Olive Festival, what’s it going to take to get you across the finish line on that high-speed bed?

Think it’s all in your head? This is reality at one of California’s wacky & zany olive festivals that celebrate a staple of any chef’s kitchen, and a favorite among consumers. Olives and premier olive oils flow from California like fine wines and often are accompanied by them at the annual events celebrating one of the oldest fruits known and used in ancient times.

Each year the City of Corning celebrates their favorite crop with a festival in August. It  includes dancing, dining, a parade, an actual Olive Drop from a helicopter, and Bed Races. This event would make cartoon character Olive Oyl (Popeye’s girlfriend) proud!
