It’s the time of year for Dachshund races in California. While dates at some county fair dachshund races are to be determined, several big events have announced their 2014 schedule. The extremely popular Wienerschnitzel Dachshund Race takes place at Los Alamitos Race Track on Saturday, July 19. Admission is only $3. Another popular event called Doxie Derby at the UC Davis Picnic includes the Dean of the Veterinary School donning a special costume and racing the winning doxie.
Though an animal activist group tried to end dachshund races several years ago claiming animal cruelty, no race is ever a wager (betting) event, race tracks are quite short, and there’s no financial incentive to push a pet into performing. Some races may award a small prize but there’s no career path for a dachshund to race in California. It’s just hilarious and fun! Many times you’ll witness Dachshunds as stubborn as mules, refusing their owners’ coaxing at the finish line.
