CALIFORNIA BEACHES — Dean Torrence, a long-time Huntington Beach resident, is known locally as the ever youthful guy who helped immortalize the “endless summer” image of California beaches and lifestyle with songs he and (deceased) partner, Jan Berry, performed such as Surf City. Shown is Dean Torrence (left) talking with fans, to the backdrop of a black & white poster once used to promote his act. In the poster Dean is the person on the right with hand on waste. Brian Wilson’s (The Beach Boys) original handwriting for the lyrics to the song, Surf City, is shown in the right photo. In red ink are changes made by Dean Torrence in the early 1960’s, part of Torrence’s personal collection of memorabilia. The lyrics changed slightly from this draft, but thank goodness for paper and pens (versus today’s computers for ‘penning’ original songs and lyrics)! Read more about this popular hit, Surf City.
