There’s no state in the U.S. that is more extreme than California, a wild & crazy place custom made for extreme sports.
If it involves speed, height, a high level of physical exertion, and highly specialized gear, it could be extreme. Expect to find a counter-culture aura, rejection of authority and rejection of status quo among ‘extreme’ participants. Though fighting off wild beasts and performing death-defying acts are timeless deeds among women & men, the modern era of ‘extreme’ dates back to first female bungee jump from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco circa 1980. Since then, cave diving, base jumping, flyboarding, BMX, FMX, and surfing are a few ways people have gotten their fix. Are extreme sports safe? Not really….Mavericks near Half Moon Bay hosts an extreme sports event that takes place each spring when the offshore waves peak at over 50 feet! World class Hawaiian surfer Sion Milosky (one of the best big-wave riders in the world,) died in March 2011 while surfing Mavericks killer waves. Just a year earlier in 2010 a rogue wave rolled ashore during the Mavericks Surf competition, injuring 13 spectators and requiring rescues of several stranded watchers. The problem with “extreme” is that it doesn’t have a safety net. People die–presumably doing what they love.
