Fandom Blossomed in California, Now $4 Billion Industry

From the Iron Horse Family Steampunk Carnivale at Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris (pictured) to Ani-Me Con at Big Fresno Fairgrounds, the weekend of March 17-18, 2018 offers great entertainment for fantasy fans.

Fandom was just a baby in 1970 when the San Diego Comic Con launched with around 300 attendees. Now the event sells out each year, exceeding 135,000 fans and more than 725 exhibitors.

Fandom is Big Biz

  • Fandom is $4 billion driver to economy annually
  • 15 largest cons attract close to half a million people
  • 70% come to shop at cons
  • Average shopper spends $100-500, not including tickets, lodging, food, and parking
  • Nearly equal split between male & female attendance
  • 63% who spend over $500 buy collectible comic items, toys, figurines, clothing, t-shirts
  • 65% of the respondents attend cons to meet new friends
