While Craig MacDonald wrote a review about the book, FORT ORD, and its life as a military training area for the Presidio of Monterey troops in 1917 until its 1994 closure (as well as its fascinating uses today,) millions love the beach aspect. Formally part of the Fort Ord Army Base, Fort Ord Dunes State Park includes 4 miles of ocean beach as one of the newest units of the California State Park System.

The land was transferred to the State in 1995 and opened to the public in 2009. While the scenic beach welcomes visitors in its current form, exciting developments are on the horizon. In 2019 construction is expected to begin on a campground with 95 new campsites in 3 distinct camping areas:

  • RV Campground Area capable of accommodating 45 large RVs with electrical and water hookups.
  • Traditional Camping Area with 40 tent campsites.
  • Hike/ Bike/ Walk-In Camping Area with 10 campsites accessible from the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail. Wow!

Many who visit this hidden gem of the coast have stories to recount about parents or grandparents who served in the military at Fort Ord. Today you can wander the beach, read about Fort’s history through interpretive signs and discover that some things are timeless. Military service at Fort Ord was considered one the best assignments due to the coveted Monterey Bay beach location.

Whether serving your country or yourself with a little soul searching, Fort Ord Dunes State Park has always been and remains one of the most beautiful places on the Planet! Go check it out.
