Finding an outdoor organ is a rarity of itself. But then finding possibly the biggest outdoor pavilion organ and hearing a free concert performed on it is too good to pass up. Heard enough? Just one more tidbit–San Diego actually has a civic organist, a job that has existed almost 100 years (since 1917). You can hear talented Dr. Carol Williams perform free Sunday concerts at 2 p.m. in Spreckels Pavilion, Balboa Park. What a glorious and unusual experience to treat your family to when visiting San Diego! Read more…>
When visiting L.A. head for free Thursday concerts performed at 12:10 p.m. on the largest musical instrument existing in any church in the world today. Among Gothic splendor, First Congretional Church of Los Angeles houses an enormous vaulted Sanctuary with multiple organs containing approx. 346 ranks, 265 stops, 233 voices, 18 divisions and more than 20,000 pipes. Under the direction of organist-in-resident Stewart W. Foster, concerts are performed every Thursday except holidays. Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. there’s a 30 minute prelude concert before Sunday Service. The church also maintains a calendar with ticketed concerts featuring choirs, vocalists, and classical music.
