The Gold Rush city of Placerville is pure gold when it comes to having fun. Free stagecoach rides are offered the Third Saturday from Noon to 3 p.m. by ‘Doc’ Wiser and his cowboy crew. Forget that the place was once called Hangtown for the hanging that took place. You can still see an effigy strung from the Hangtown Saloon where the hanging tree once stood, reminding visitors that justice was meted swiftly and quite publicly. Though that bygone era is not forgotten, cowboys and miners have other things on their minds these days. See: placerville-downtown.org
