Gliding through the Snow at Mt. Shasta Ski Park, Coppervale

Published on: January 21, 2012

Shasta Cascade, California — Winter is a time of cheer on the snowy slopes of Northern California. The snow is here and you can be part of the excitement, carving your way down the mountain.   There are several ski resorts and ski areas throughout the Shasta Cascade region that offer excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the lesser publicized ski region of the state, located off I-5 that runs between San Diego and Oregon. The Cascade range of mountains in Northern California offer a variety of winter experiences similar to the better known Sierra Nevada mountain destinations, but generally with less crowds and more affordable accommodations.

Winter Excitement in California’s “north woods”:

  • Mt. Shasta Ski Park – Panoramic views,  32 trails, night skiing, terrain parks, a super half pipe, 3 triple chair lifts
  • Coppervale Ski Area – poma lift, rope tow, half pipe, terrain park, and 5 miles of cross country skiing trails near the town of Westwood.
  • Plumas-Eureka Ski Bowl – home to first-ever ski lift in America. Back in the 1870’s miners would ride a series of gravity-powered trams (that originally carried ore) to the top of Eureka Peak, then they’d strap on their twelve-foot long, four-inch wide wooden skis and ski to the bottom.

Where to stay:

  • Mount Shasta Resort packages start at just $63.50 per person per night, you can create your own 2-4 day ski trip.
  • McCloud River Mercantile Hotel offers packages that include lift tickets, you choose either a massage, luxurious salt soak, cross country skiing, or a dog sledding package.

The Shasta Cascade region of California features the great outdoors, with national and state parks, fishing, the houseboat capital of the world, skiing, caves, and lots of camping, mountain hiking and adventures to explore. In the spring after the snow melts, rafting season is a blast.  Call 1-800-474-278. shastacascade.com
