Pictured is the the California Academy of Sciences (calacademy.org) 2.5-acre living roof in Golden Gate Park. A new link was added in an ecological corridor for wildlife when installed in 2007. The roof is planted with dozens of native California species, including California plants that provide habitat for local wildlife. Skylights in the roof allow sunlight to reach the living rainforest and coral reef contained within the building. They also open automatically to allow heat to escape. The living roof is composed of seven layers of material, designed to create insulation, prevent runoff, retain soil, allow for drainage, and promote healthy plant growth. Here are some statistics and interesting things going on with this unique, green roof.
