Gumby Festival in Glendora, Calif. on Sept. 18-20, 2015 and Gumbo Festival in Pasadena on September 27 share geographic proximity (18 miles distance) and both are fond of “gumbo” — though types of gumbo are quite different — and so are the festivals! At the three-day Gumby Festival at Citrus College people converge to watch, learn and enjoy the magic of a cartoon character created from a clay and mud mixture called gumbo. Gumby was created by an American pioneer in the popularization of stop motion clay animation, Art Cloakey. Orphaned, adopted, and raised by a talented musician & teacher at Pomona College (not far from Citrus College where the festival takes place,) the youngster was taught painting, drawing and filmmaking. The aesthetic environment became the home of Gumby.
Gumbo Festival (gumbofestpasadena.com) features a savory, Southern-inspired stew which is a veritable art form in Louisiana. So, if you’re looking for a connection between the Gumby and Gumbo Festivals in Southern California, they both involve art forms!
