Hog Wild for County Fairs

July is one of the ‘hottest’ months for county fairs in California — people go hog wild. They pig-out on fair food, cheer at pig races, see blue ribbon hogs and watch adorable piglets ‘on the farm.’ At California State Fair this year they may even compete in the Guinea Pig Squeal Contest. Why do humans hold such an interest in pigs, you ask? There are number of possible answers. Here are a few:

  • Decadent fair foods often contain bacon or pork — Chocolate-Covered Pork Rinds or Wasabi Bacon Bombs have been a hit in past seasons.
  • A few folks attending the fair may be wearing a life-saving bioprosthetic porcine (pig) heart valve. By some amazing twist of evolution, human heart valves and pig valves are very similar in structure and function. One of the world’s top manufacturers (Edwards) is based in Irvine, Calif.
  • Some fair guests may have a pig at home as a pet.
  • Pigs are smart & they’re social animals – just like us.
