Some call it Easter Weekend but in San Francisco it’s an unpredictably wacky weekend. For law enforcement there will be no rest. Here’s why:
1. 4-20 @ Hippie Hill. Golden Gate Park “Hippie Hill” happens every year on April 20. Recreational marijuana users, stoners and hippies take to “Hippie Hill” to celebrate in the park and in Haight-Ashbury. Last year there was a cloud of smoke, a wall of people and tons of trash, remnants of munchies attacks.
2. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s Easter Weekend begins on April 19 with Holy Saturday Castro Procession. Experience Sistory through a guided meditation art walk with a special opening ritual from Founding Sisters. On Easter the sisters head for Golden Gate Park for a spirited event in which the cross-dressing Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence put on a show. Burlesque meets Easter Bonnet and Hunky Jesus, tied up in a bow with the crowning of Foxy Mary. It’s strange enough, but then they’ve added this theme: The Emerald Jubilee, A Trip To Oz. thesisters.org
3. Union Street Easter Parade (Apr.20) where your bonnet may have more than frills upon it. The annual street celebration is lively– never boring.
4. Cherry Blossom Festival and Parade (Apr. 19-20) in Japantown includes Asian traditions and up to 200,000 in attendance.
