Huntington Beach is thinking of adding outdoor, street view surveillance cameras to shops downtown (in addition to indoor merchant cameras) to give police remote monitoring in an attempt to curb potential theft and crime.
Do you feel buggy as if something is giving you the crawly creeps? Perhaps it’s that new drone that looks like a fly, or maybe it’s the guy pointing his cell phone at you and taking a shot. California might well be considered the electronic surveillance capitol of the U.S. And, it is no surprise that Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahearn wants the local government to pay for unmanned aerial drones for spying. Intelligence gathering, suspicious persons, and large crowd control disturbances were listed as planned uses for the drones he’s requested, though the Sheriff later said, “We will not use this for surveillance.” California is one of a dozen states considering legislation to restrict the use of unmanned aerial vehicles by police departments.
Nearly all of us at one time or another have been monitored, or have the feeling that we are being watched. In certain types of jobs it comes with the territory, and in the home situation it may be just a normal part of growing up, getting married and getting old. But what’s concerting to most is the secret monitoring that we have not been informed about, though we have our suspicions that it is taking place.
