Once upon a time– in 1973, childhood buddies, David John (DJ) Pratt and Carl James Malani Bilyeu auditioned at the Rainbow Villa for the newest popular duo, Cecilio & Kapono.
Malani had solo gigs at the Oar House in Hawaii Kai and DJ was downstairs at Chuck’s in Sunlight. They got together, wrote a few songs, rehearsed and formed a name, Kalapana, playing their first show at Chuck’s in Hawaii Kai. Though they couldn’t gain consensus on what their band name meant, here are some meanings that resonated:
The band grew and so did its popularity as it began opening acts for popular concerts featuring Earth, Wind & Fire, the Moody Blues and Sly & The Family Stone.
Decades later, the band has traveled the globe, released many albums and CDs, and continues to delight audiences with as the symbol, inspiration and positive direction for Contemporary Hawaiian music and muscians today.
