One of the most interesting and best documented eras of California history is on display throughout the Gold Country region in the Sierra Nevada foothills. In El Dorado County near the city of Placerville, be sure to stop by Gold Bug Park, home to Joshua Hendy Stamp Mill where ore was crushed and gold extracted using machinery such as the Hendy Stamp Mill. Now located inside a museum the mill includes two sets of 4 stamps weighing 1,000 pounds each–they once could be heard a mile away in Placerville! At Gold Bug Park there’s also an actual mine you can tour, panning opportunities, a museum and gift store. Get hours, etc. at goldbugpark.org
