Jump Over the Bonfire for Goodluck

While the Irish celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the Persians are jumping over the bonfire for good luck in cultural new year celebrations taking place in mid-March with the arrival of spring. Nowruz means ‘new day’.

  • In Berkeley one of the longest-running, most popular events in California (shown in photos) takes place at the Persian Center. The public is invited to share in the tradition and warm hospitality on March 18, 2014.
  • In Los Angeles the Farhang Foundation hosts Nowruz (Iranian New Year) Celebration at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on March 23, 2014. The event includes a traditional Iranian Costume Parade. Most events are free and open to the public, while a festival presentation inside the theater costs $15. See lacma.org
  • In San Jose‘s Santana Row on Mar 18 the Persian New Year (Nowruz) celebrates the arrival of spring in Park Valencia. See santanarow.com for time and details about this free event.
  • In Davis the Iranian Alumni Association invites the public to a dazzling evening of dancing, dining and entertainment to celebrate Nowruz on March 22, 2014 on the UC Davis campus. Tickets: $50, call: (530) 756-4192.
  • In San Diego the Annual Nowruz Celebration features Black Cats, Persian Dance Academy & DJ Julius and Dinner by Amir Catering on March 22, 2014 at Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. Ticket Price: $140, see pccsd.org
