New rides in Balboa Fun Zone include a Bungee Jump (not shown), Mechanical Shark and the newest from Australia called a Fishpipe.
While local Balboa residents lament the loss of a carousel for kids to ride in Balboa Fun Zone, the latest and newest attractions that colorfully greet visiting tourists include a big bubble that looks like a giant blowfish. You enter the inflated ball and it begins to spin. As it starts spinning, water from a chamber gently washes past you as you try to stand up or climb to no avail. This Fishpipe is now the 3rd attraction introduced by ExplorOcean (explorocean.org), a themed museum on the Newport Peninsula bayfront next to several arcades and a Ferris Wheel. The Balboa Ferry, Catalina Flyer and Newport Landing Fishing / Whale Watching boat tours are also in and around the Fun Zone. If you’re going on a trip to Catalina, be sure to make the Fun Zone part of your adventure. Events such as Science Saturdays include free arts & crafts sessions for kids and adults.
