KERNVILLE, CALIF.–The annual Kern (Whitewater) River Festival April 21-22, 2012 celebrates the spring snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada mountains. The water flows rapidly, creating challenges and thrills in Kernville, the California Whitewater Rafting Capital. The rules are simple at the annual Hooligan BYOB Contest (shown in photo), part of the Kern River Festival: Only MAKE-SHIFT boats, using NON-BOAT MATERIALS are accepted.
Similar to the water portion of the Kinetic Sculpture Race held Memorial Weekend in Humboldt County, Hooligan BYOB Race only takes place in the water. Other challenges during the River Festival include a Wildwater Biathalon. Stick There is also a T.J. Citizen Slalom Race (Junior Olympic Qualifier,) Standup Boarder-Cross and more exciting challenges. The Kern River Festival (kernfestival.com) takes place April 21-22, 2012. Kernville also celebrates wet & wild WhiteWater Wednesday, now in its 25th year. It is held June 20, 2012 (kernvillechamber.com).
