If you’ve watched the US Open (August 27-September 9, 2018) broadcast from Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York, it’s been hot & humid there, and many matches have gone past midnight. Last night was torturous as World Number One Rafael Nadal (Spain) took on and finally beat Austria’s Dominc Thiem for the longest match of this year’s US Open, lasting 4 hours and 49 minutes!

For those who want to kick it up a notch themselves, California has some fun weekend events, un-gluing you from the US Open, even though it IS addictive to see!

Kick Up the Dust

  • ALAMEDA: Alameda Tennis Tournament Sept.7-9 at Fairfield Tennis Courts, alamedaca.gov
  • AUBURN: Gold Country Fair California Nights and Country Lights, Sept.6-9.  Monster Trucks & Quad Wars and The Gold Country Fair Demolition Derby are dirty, dusty and definitely exciting stuff.
  • BANNING: Stagecoach Days September 7-9. Bull riding, calf roping, barrel racing, saddle bronc, bareback and breakaway PLUS the annual Stagecoach Days Parade and big carnival.
  • BARSTOW: Marine Base Extreme Rodeo Sept.7-8.
  • CARMEL BY THE SEA: Carmel Beach annual Sandcastle Competition “Rooms in the Dunes” Sept.8 is extraordinary. It’s produced by the American Institute of Architects Monterey Bay Chapter!
  • CARMICHAEL: Dinner in the Park catered event at Charles Jensen Botanical Gardens still has tickets as of this posting.
  • CLEAR LAKE:  Seaplane Splash In Sept.7-8. Not so much dust, but a big splash.
  • CORONADO: Beach Polo Cup Sept.7-9. Sand and balls flying…
  • HUNTINGTON BEACH: Blessing of the Waves Sept.9 pays homage to the Pacific Ocean — and surfing!
  • TULARE: CCPRA Rodeo Sept.8
  • VENTURA: Chalk Art and Street Painting Festival Sept.8-9
