UPDATE: Los Angeles Beaches officials have clarified the laws governing L.A. beaches and say that news reports released by major newspapers about banning balls and digging holes in the sand were inflated and simply aren’t true. However, upon hearing spokesperson Carol Baker, PIO for LA County Beaches and Harbors, explain the rules, they sound eerily close to what was reported previously. For complete do’s and don’ts, see: www.beaches.lacounty.gov.
If you think you’ve heard everything, listen to this!
Los Angeles Board of Supervisors this week approved fining tourists and locals $1,000 for throwing footballs or Frisbees on any beach in Los Angeles County. Considered part of beach-goer activities that could potentially disrupt or even injure the public, the board approved a 37-page ordinance that now prohibits any person to cast, toss, throw, kick or roll any object other than a beach ball or volleyball on any beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the winter off-season, the new rules aren’t enforced. Watch your kids or they could end up costing you more than grief. The new law says that you and your children aren’t allowed to dig a hole deeper than 18 inches into the sand except where permission is granted for film and TV production services only.
What to do? Avoid Los Angeles beaches. Spend your tourist dollars at nearly 1,000 miles of coast that DOES allow Frisbees, footballs and digging holes in the sand. Pity the poor Los Angeles Lifeguards who are charged with enforcing these ridiculous laws when they are trying to make sure millions of visitors in the water simply don’t drown!
