In California we like to celebrate our pumpkins by baking them, eating them and doing all sorts of things to them. Such as? Californians like to smash pumpkins, catapult them, decorate them, weigh them, float them in water, make glass replicas of them sold as art, and even race them! The photos show pumpkin races and vehicles in the Manhattan Beach Pumpkin Race Festival. It’s been a tradition for 22 years in Los Angeles County’s South Bay city.
The Pumpkin Race rules are fairly simple…sign up to race (pumpkinrace.com). Next, decorate your pumpkin as you like. Insert two independent axles through your pumpkin and attach wheels to the axles. Show up at the race and when the guy says, “Go,” give it a big push to send it down the hill. It sounds simple but some of the pumpkins are actually quite elaborate.
