Festivals abound during the first weekend in May. Among the small town favorites is the Mariposa Butterfly Festival, which includes costumes, a butterfly hat contest, and a delightful parade. If you weren’t aware, there’s special significance in the Gold Rush era city’s name, Mariposa. Translated, it means “butterfly”. Why are butterflies so celebrated? They represent the beauty and whimsical nature that people long for in their lives. Butterflies don’t live long but they provide such a gift during their short time on the planet. If you get a chance to visit Mariposa, the city steeped in history is a gateway to Yosemite National Park. It’s a fun place to explore on your way to see Half Dome and spectacular waterfalls.
