3 To See: Monarch Butterfly Groves

The monarch butterfly against all odds continues annual migrations from Mexico northward into California. The counts have been down in recent years with loss of habitat cited as one reason. The orange and black winged creatures arrive in October, clustering among eucalyptus groves when the weather is cold.  They leave their wintering spots in March.

GOLETA: Monarch Grove Sanctuary Jan. 17, 2014 count 2,400 monarch butterflies
PACIFIC GROVE “Butterfly Capital of California” or Butterfly Town USA: Jan. 8, 2014 count 11,000
PISMO BEACH: Jan. 13, 2014 count 30,000 approx.
