Not far from the race track at the county fairs you’ll find another type of race that allows no betting and it’s just for fun! There’s nearly as big a crowd and certainly as enthusiastic one watching the short, fast pig races that take place each year. These sleek, fit racers aren’t your ordinary pigs you’ll see as you wander through a fair watching 4-H kids brush their plump, pink darlings. Racing pigs are small and they’re lean. They run several races per day and travel from fair to fair, putting on show at each designated stop. Look for county fair pig races at fairs in Costa Mesa, Ventura, Quincy, Lancaster, Watsonville, Bakersfield and Fresno this summer and fall. As fair season winds down in the fall, pig races continue their popularity at Halloween pumpkin patches in Temecula, Anderson, Patterson and Moorpark.
