Point Mugu on the Ventura coast includes around 5 miles of beaches that are a short drive from L.A. and Malibu and approx. 15 miles south of Oxnard on Highway 1. It feels like the edge of civilization driving north from Santa Monica where everything is so congested, then suddenly so relaxed and less crowded as you drive out of Malibu. You can visit, meander, and maybe camp, or even stop for a minute. Beaches are just the beginning of fun in a scenic place where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the sea. Point Mugu Beach and State Park is open to the public for camping (parks.ca.gov) or you can simply enjoy a coastal drive and day visit to sunbathe, fish, surf, beach-comb, or hike the hills. Shown in the photo are pieces of driftwood washed ashore on the sand, next to colorful wildflowers that grow right out of the sandy soil.
