Reassuring: SLIGHTLY Radioactive Parts Head Down I-5 Freeway from San Onofre

Published on: November 04, 2012

NOTE: This story was written for Sunday, November 4, but due to daylight savings time clock change, Google’s Feedburner did not publish it on its assigned date.

If you were told that only slightly radioactive material is next to you as you drive to your fantasy vacation between Disneyland and Legoland, wouldn’t you feel assured? Well you’re supposed to feel a peaceful, easy feeling from the news that Southern California Edison crews are hauling a gigantic piece of “slightly-radioactive” spent nuclear equipment on Southern California freeways tonight. The exposure that a person could receive standing 5 to 10 feet away from the transport for an hour would be equivalent to a dental x-ray, according to the electric company that owns and operates the nuclear power plant at San Onofre.  If you see a truck with big chunks of metal equipment on the 5 Freeway tonight, wave to the driver and hope he has on protective gear (where’s Google’s self-driving car when you need it?)

PRICELESS!

  • San Clemente residents 5 miles from San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station being told there was only a minor radiation leak causing the plant to shut down earlier in the year
  • “Hot rocks” at the beach nearby that caught a woman’s pants on fire after she put them in her pocket
  • Elevated levels of radiation found in the kelp beds a few miles upstream in Corona del Mar
  • Being told that the plant wants to re-open–SCE wants to run the repaired nuclear reactor to see if  the problem is fixed!
  • Two nuclear reactors in California built in major fault zones (San Onofre & Diablo) are capable of exposing much of California’s population to radiation that could kill millions if a Fukushima style disaster occurs.
