There are plenty of “Rhodies” in Eureka–every year the Greater Eureka Chamber of Commerce hosts an event that honors the Rhododendron, a plant with blossoms that come in colors ranging from white to pink, bright pink or red. It’s hard to keep a straight face when you say the name of this plant fast three times (much less spell it,) so they created a moniker–Rhody Parade.
Now in its 47th year, the Rhododendron Parade marches down the streets of Eureka on April 28 at 10 a.m. The theme in 2012 is “Service Above Self – A Tribute to Veterans”. Returning from Afghanistan are five grand marshals: Sergeant Greg Hill, Staff Sergeant Josh Siipola, Specialist Christopher Craps, First Sergeant Gary Cooper and Sergeant Tori Siipola. The public is invited to this free event and if you happen to live in the area, you can enter a float (rhodyparade.com).
