San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum is known for its new, cutting edge exhibits, but also honors popular traditions and festivals such as the annual new year bell ringing. This year guests are invited to Japanese Bell-Ringing Ceremony to herald the start of a fresh new year. In this contemplative and festive ceremony, participants can strike the museum’s 2,100-lb., 16th-century Japanese bronze bell (right photo). If you miss this December 31 event, return on January 10, 2015 for the annual Mochi-Pounding Ceremony (left photo) to help make sweet rice cakes. The museum is open every day except Mondays and Christmas Day. General adult admission is around $15, but if you show up on the first Sunday of the month you get in free with Target free days that you’ll find at many museums throughout California. Other bell ringing ceremonies on January 1 include Angels Gate Korean Friendship Bell ringing and the Bell Ringing at Mission San Juan Capistrano in honor of Friar Junipero Serra, founder of California missions.
