Rollin’ On the (Sacramento) River

Published on: April 02, 2012

When visiting Sacramento, you can sleep on the historic Delta King Hotel.

Old Sacramento sits along the Sacramento River and is a focal point for dining, entertainment and nightlife. The river isn’t just the heart & soul of Sacramento–it runs over 500 miles throughout California, beginning at the Shasta Dam near Redding and flowing through Sacramento to its end at the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. It meets up with Suisun Bay near Antioch and flows to the sea via The Carquinez Strait.

The Sacramento River is California’s largest river flowing from the shadow of Mount Shasta in the north through the Central Valley and the Delta to San Francisco Bay. It is so significant to the area that there are many websites devoted to the Sacramento River, considered an irreplaceable resource to Northern California’s ecology. Boating, fishing, camping and swimming on the Sacramento and its reservoirs attract more than 8 million visitors a year. More than 70% of the salmon caught off the California coast spawn in the Sacramento River and its hatcheries.

Sacramento River in and around Sacramento forms a delta offering fishing and boating in a river lifestyle residents of the outlying areas of  the city enjoy. When you fly into Sacramento during the day, you can’t help but be amazed by the the twisting, winding flow of water through fields–all the way up to your arrival and landing at Sacramento Airport.  With enough time to explore the area, take a drive to see the small towns, cities, and businesses such as wineries that are located along the not-so-lazy Sacramento River.
