Blame it on out-of-work architect Alfred Butts. He invented SCRABBLE and even though it took 10 years to get others interested in the concept, by 1948 he managed to convince another inventor to produce the board game. In exchange for selling his rights, he’d get a royalty on every SCRABBLE game sold. SCRABBLE players can hone their skills at Escondido SCRABBLE Tournament (escondido.org/library/literacy) on March 9, 2013. The 2013 National SCRABBLE Championship (scrabbleplayers.org) takes place on July 19-24, 2013 at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
