Nearly 300 of the disappearing symbols of the American West roam free and live out their natural lives within the 5,000-acre Wild Horse Sanctuary near Shingletown, California, approximately 170 miles northeast of Sacramento. A nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving America’s wild horses has served as a haven for wild mustangs and burros since incorporation in 1979.

The sanctuary has provided a home to numerous horses rescued from federal lands in the West, including some 40 wild mustangs from Nevada’s Shoshone Indian Nation and Virginia Range, a small herd of Santa Cruz Island horses from Channel Islands National Park, and several individual rescues such as Phantom, the magnificent wild stallion from western Nevada. During the summer the public can participate in two and three day trail rides to get up-close views of the horses. See details at wildhorsesanctuary.org
